Round 2: Social Media project with Pinterest by Jennifer Hernandez

Social Media is a huge part of our everyday lives. There are several social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, etc that are used to connect  friends and family together. It provides a communication channel for individuals that not only want to stay in touch with their friends/family but also to showcase their own interests or promote a business/events.

An example of this can be seen on many Instagram and Pinterest accounts relating to health or fitness. A “fitness guru” such as missdollycastro on Instagram has a following based on her interests ( healthy lifestyle and fitness) and career choice. She is not only a fitness model but also a personal trainer and promoter. She has been sponsored by companies such as Fashion Nova, Nike, Protein product companies. Below is a picture of her Instagram:

Similar to this platform is Pinterest. Individuals are able to use the app and website in order to ” pin” posts that interest them. Individuals are also able to create their own ” pin” folders or make their own personal posts. Let’s say someone is interested in the benefits of meditation, they would create their own folder or posts about information related to this topic. For the social media project, I was in charge of posting on our Oz Health Pinterest. In the beginning there was an equal amount of followers and following (31). However, throughout the duration of my pins throughout the week we were able to get a couple more followers.

Below I have provided the general overview of the Pinterest and the type of posts I would make daily: I am really passionate about self-care and healthy-eating so the posts were related to that. For instance, meditation tips and how to make easy tasty meals on a budget.

Pinterest is tricky when it comes to gaining followers. Reason being, some individuals might like your “pins” and post them on their page but not necessarily follow your page.  I did notice that if the page is organized and consistent then more people are willing to follow the page. I also looked at other resources to assist me in this process. For example I read this article that would help me grow the follower base. The article was  ” 8 piece of cake ways to get more Pinterest Followers”. These are some of the tips I used:

  1. Post original content: such as info graphics and fun images
  2. Represent content for others or share
  3. Follow people
  4. Use keywords in descriptions such as #fithealth #meditation
  5. Run a Pinterest contest
  6. Be consistent
  7. Link Pinterest to other social websites such as Instagram
  8. Make your website Pinterest friendly- ( easy to navigate)
