Reflection #11 & #12 Emily Emmons

The articles chosen for weeks 11 and 12 focused heavily on sleep by focusing on improvement methods such as sleep technology and binaural beats.

The article written about sleep technology lists the latest gadgets designed to improve sleep quality.  These pieces of technology vary in size, price, and purpose. The most affordable device on the list is called the S+ Sleep Monitor and costs $50. It is a touch-free monitor that detects tossing and turning during the night. This leads me to wonder, how accurate is this device? How accurate can this monitor read sleep behavior without having any sort of physical contact? The most expensive gadget on the list is the Sleep Number IT Bed and costs $1,099. This bed connects with a smart phone and is then used as a controller. The firmness of the bed can be adjusted through the phone. The bed also measures heart rate, breathing, and movements. This device makes me question, what happens when the user’s phone breaks, goes missing, etc.? Why is there no back up remote to put customers at ease?

The article that contains the “Binaural Beats Freak Awards 2017” lists the top ten binaural beats songs and includes a brief description of each as well as links to the actual song. The 10th place award went to BBM- Chill Pill. This song is tuned to 528 hz which is meant to clear the mind and bring a sense of deep inner peace and awareness. The first place award went to BBM- Deep Meditation. This song is designed to be a quick break from everyday life. My favorite binaural beat from this list came in second place and is called Ennora- Perfect Sleep. This song serves as a natural remedy for insomniacs. I liked this one the best because I am a sleep enthusiast and take sleep very seriously. If I don’t get a good night’s sleep then it is impossible for me to function throughout the day. This is just one of the many benefits binaural beats offer.

The scholarly article written about binaural beats explains that these songs can be used to boost cognition and mood. I believe that binaural beats absolutely need to increase popularity to spread their immense beneficial effects. Binaural beats are a useful tool that benefit all dimensions of wellness. I think that if there are enough health educators that believe in the power of binaural beats, they will become more widely used. This spike in popularity will spread the benefits these songs offer and help make their users feel a sense of balance among their wellness dimensions.
